FC Barcelona’s forward line is set for further upheaval this summer, with Robert Lewandowski having left the club and Barcelona searching for a new No. 9. Paris Saint-Germain and the Blaugranes have reached an agreement in the region of €50m (£42.7m; $57.6m) for Ferran Torres, a deal that would bring the Spaniard’s time at Barcelona to an end.
According to The Athletic, Barcelona have confirmed that the agreement will involve no add-ons. Documentation between the two clubs is still to be exchanged before the move is made official. The outlet had reported on Wednesday that PSG were close to agreeing a deal with Barcelona for the 26-year-old.
Barcelona’s willingness to sell centres on a contractual clause. Any renewal of Torres’s deal would have triggered a payment of around €8m (£6.8m; $9.2m) to Manchester City, owing to a clause in the agreement that brought him to Barcelona for an initial €55m plus €10m in potential add-ons in January 2022.
The financial ramifications of offering Torres an increased contract left sporting director Deco reluctant to work on a new deal, according to sources familiar with the situation. Senior club sources said Barcelona were open to a sale rather than risk Torres potentially leaving on a free transfer next summer, when his current contract expires.
Torres leaves Barcelona with 65 goals and 23 assists in 207 appearances, having won three league titles with the club. He featured 49 times in all competitions last season and scored 21 goals. He also scored Spain’s winning goal in the 106th minute of the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina at MetLife Stadium last month.
The departure would leave Barcelona without both of their recent centre-forward options following Lewandowski’s move to the Chicago Fire in MLS. Barcelona have strengthened their front line by signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle and Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund, but the club’s search for a new No. 9 has become more pressing. Atletico Madrid have not been willing to sanction the exit of Barcelona’s primary target, Julian Alvarez.
With three weeks left in the transfer window, documentation remains to be completed between Barcelona and PSG before the transfer can be confirmed.
