Barcelona’s Centre-Back Gap Complicates €60m January Choice

FC Barcelona spent heavily over the summer to reshape Hansi Flick’s squad, and yet the club’s financial position heading into the winter window remains stronger than the outlay might suggest. According to SPORT, the Blaugranes still have around €60 million in Financial Fair Play margin even after completing all of their summer business.

That leaves Deco and the sporting department with a genuine decision to make before the winter market opens, one that could shape both January recruitment and the club’s registration flexibility for incoming signings.

SPORT frames the situation as a straightforward dilemma rather than a confirmed spending plan. Barcelona can either use the €60 million margin to reinforce the squad in January, or they can request that it be carried over to help with the 2027-28 wage bill, a season in which the club expects reduced income.

The summer window already saw up to seven new arrivals at Camp Nou: Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri Hernandez, Joao Cancelo, Jesse Bisiwu, Gabriel Jesus and Dominik Livakovic. Despite that volume of business, Barcelona were unable to land a new centre-back, and Deco is reportedly already planning his approach for January to address that gap, a process that will inevitably run alongside the kind of salary-rule scrutiny that has affected previous Barcelona registrations. Any move for a defender would also need to account for how rivals such as Inter Milan have positioned themselves in that same market.

The carryover option is governed by Article 44.4 of LaLiga’s regulations, which permits clubs to transfer unused wage margin into the following season, provided the request is filed before the winter window begins. Crucially, only 75% of the carried amount becomes usable, meaning the full €60 million would translate into roughly €45 million of additional wage capacity for 2027-28.

That reduction matters because Barcelona’s income, and therefore their salary space, is set to fall next season. The club will play home matches at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys while roofing work is carried out at Spotify Camp Nou, a temporary relocation that directly informs why preserving part of the current margin could outweigh the appeal of immediate January reinforcements.

Barcelona’s only choice, based on what has been reported, is between strengthening now or protecting a smaller but still meaningful cushion for a financially tighter season ahead. Whichever path Deco chooses, the centre-back position remains the clearest area of squad need identified so far.
