Suárez Backs Álvarez Move: ‘He Will Fit In Right Away at Barça’

The pursuit of Julián Álvarez has become one of the defining transfer sagas of the summer for FC Barcelona, with the Blaugranes understood to be convinced of the player’s desire to move to the Catalan club even as Atlético Madrid’s hierarchy has publicly refused to entertain any offer. Into that standoff has stepped a figure whose opinion carries genuine weight on both sides of the equation – Luis Suárez, a man who wore the shirts of both clubs and who knows Argentine football from the inside.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, the Uruguayan striker was asked directly about the prospect of Álvarez joining Barcelona and left little ambiguity in his assessment.

“He’s a player who works a lot. At Barcelona he will have wingers who will create many situations for him. He has good link-up play, good movements. He will fit in right away at Barcelona.”

At 25 years of age, Álvarez arrives at this juncture with a profile that fits neatly into what Hansi Flick demands from a centre-forward – intelligent movement, relentless pressing, and the capacity to operate in tight spaces rather than simply as a focal point. His numbers at Atlético have been consistently productive, with 29 goals in all competitions in his debut season and 20 goals alongside nine assists in 2025–26, though a goal drought that stretched from December into the new year provided the backdrop against which Barcelona reaffirmed their willingness to bid in the region of €80 million. Atlético’s CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has been unequivocal that the club has no desire to sell, and with Álvarez contracted through 2030, the structural obstacles facing the Catalans remain considerable.

Suárez also drew on his own experience at Liverpool in 2013, when he forced an exit to join Arsenal only to be talked into staying by captain Steven Gerrard – a conversation that ultimately led him to Barcelona the following summer. He suggested Simeone could yet play a similar role with Álvarez: “In this case the same thing could happen with Julián: that Cholo grabs him and tells him, ‘This year I want you to stay with us.'” It is a parallel that acknowledges the player’s apparent intent while leaving open the possibility that the move does not materialise this window. Suárez spent five seasons at Barcelona between 2014 and 2020, winning one Liga title and the treble in 2014–15, and his familiarity with the demands of the role Álvarez would inherit lends his endorsement more than ceremonial value.

Hopefully, once the World Cup concludes and all parties return to direct negotiations, Álvarez’s clear preference and Suárez’s confidence in his adaptability prove to be accurate forecasts of how the situation resolves.
