FC Barcelona have made a new centre-forward their clearest attacking priority this summer, and the search has centred almost entirely on one man for months. Julián Álvarez has reportedly rejected the possibility of a return to the Premier League with Arsenal, informing Atlético de Madrid that Barcelona remain his only destination of choice for a move away from the Metropolitano.
As beIN Sports has reported, Atlético’s hierarchy had identified a sale to Arsenal as the ideal solution to an increasingly unsustainable internal situation, with the club ready to negotiate with the London side to secure a financially viable exit for the Argentine. Chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, however, maintains what the outlet describes as an absolute veto on any deal with the Blaugranes, a stance rooted in institutional pride.
That veto has pushed the relationship between player and club toward what beIN Sports called a critical breaking point, with Álvarez said to be refusing to act as a bargaining chip for a destination he has no interest in. Atlético’s high asking price is another obstacle to any deal, while Gil Marín’s resistance to strengthening Barcelona adds further complication to the negotiations.
The standoff also has consequences beyond Álvarez himself. Manager Diego Pablo Simeone had reportedly been counting on Premier League funds from an Arsenal sale to help finance a move for Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres. According to beIN Sports, a deal with Arsenal would have provided the liquidity needed to cover the Swedish striker’s substantial release clause. With Álvarez refusing that route, Atlético’s rebuild plans are affected alongside his future.
Barcelona remain interested in the forward. ESPN has reported that Barça representatives have held various meetings with Álvarez’s representatives to explore a possible move, while the Catalan club are aware that any agreement could prove difficult because of Atlético’s high valuation.
For now, Barcelona’s sporting department is watching from a position of patience rather than urgency. BeIN Sports reports that the club view Álvarez as their primary candidate to become the new starting number nine and could wait to make a fuller move in the winter transfer window if his situation in Madrid remains fractured.
