FC Barcelona’s defensive recruitment picture is more crowded than the list of names linked to the club might suggest, and the latest indication is that Aymeric Laporte will not be joining that list in any meaningful way this summer. According to Mundo Deportivo, Laporte is aware that Barcelona have looked at him, but the 32-year-old continues to redirect any enquiries to Athletic Club, where he is contracted until 2028.
The appeal of the player is straightforward enough. Laporte’s World Cup for Spain – during which he formed a highly successful partnership with Pau Cubarsi as La Roja lifted the trophy – made him a profile Barca can see as appealing Left-footed, and already proven alongside Pau Cubarsi, the sporting logic is not difficult to follow.
The obstacles, however, are considerable. Earlier reports had suggested Laporte’s release clause could be triggered for less than €15 million, a figure that would have made the operation genuinely viable for a club operating under financial constraints. The latest information casts serious doubt on that number, indicating the actual clause is meaningfully higher. Athletic are also known for taking a firm position in these situations and would be expected to point interested clubs towards the contractual figure rather than willingly negotiate a reduced deal.
The broader relationship between the two clubs adds another layer of friction. Tensions from the pursuit of Nico Williams across consecutive summers have left the dynamic between Barcelona and Athletic less than straightforward, Athletic are expected to hold firm rather than negotiate a reduced deal.
From a squad construction perspective, the Blaugranes have also yet to establish a clear need. Flick and sporting director Deco are understood to view their current centre-back group as sufficient without a departure first. Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, and Gerard Martin all remain in the squad. Adding another senior defender without first moving one out would complicate both the wage structure and the balance of Flick’s rotation options.
Unless there is a significant departure, Hansi Flick and Deco already believe they have enough centre-backs, and adding another expensive defender makes little sense without first creating space. The Catalans have been monitoring several defensive options without committing to a formal operation, a pattern consistent with the club’s contingency-led approach to the position. Other defenders have been assessed in parallel, and the picture will shift only if a significant exit from the current back line materialises.
Unless the defensive market shifts considerably before the window closes – or Barcelona move one of their existing centre-backs – Laporte is set to remain at Athletic Club, where his four-year contract gives the Basque club every reason to resist.
