Barcelona are working on a new deal for Marc Bernal that could extend his contract from 2029 to 2031. According to SPORT, sporting director Deco met Bernal’s representatives, Frederico Pena and Raul Verdu, at the Ciutat Esportiva on Wednesday and offered a two-year extension alongside a salary improvement.
SPORT reported that the meeting left both sides confident, with Barcelona reiterating that Bernal remains important to the club’s plans amid the expected arrival of Rodri. Bernal’s camp had concerns about his role following the anticipated signing, but the club sought to address those doubts in the meeting.
The salary improvement would not take effect until September because of Financial Fair Play considerations, according to the report. Barcelona have used a similar structure in other renewals, including Eric Garcia’s. Bernal signed his most recent contract extension in September 2025, committing him to the club until June 2029 with a €500 million release clause.
That agreement included a commitment to review Bernal’s salary once he had established himself in the first-team setup. SPORT reported that Barcelona now intend to fulfil that commitment, with Deco and Hansi Flick viewing the midfielder as an important part of the club’s future.
Bernal has continued to prioritise staying at Barcelona despite interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City, according to SPORT. The two sides are negotiating the extension, while the club’s message is that Rodri’s arrival will not halt Bernal’s development. After two seasons with the first team, Bernal is set to continue his progress at Barcelona.
