Yamal Rests, Porro Carries Tightness Ahead of World Cup Final

FC Barcelona will have up to eight players in the World Cup final against Argentina, but one day after Spain’s semi-final victory over France, two of their most prominent representatives were absent from training. Diario AS has reported that Lamine Yamal and Pedro Porro sat out Spain’s first session at the Red Bull New York training grounds in New Jersey on Thursday, though both are expected to be available for the final.

The reasons differ between the two. Yamal’s absence is purely precautionary – Spain coach Luis de la Fuente confirmed in his post-match press conference that the Barcelona winger is fine, but the staff opted to give him a rest day to ensure he absorbs the physical toll of the France game, which included a heavy share of kicks and tackles, before ramping up preparation. The primary source is explicit on this point: there is nothing of concern, and the decision reflects load management rather than any underlying problem.

Porro’s situation carries a slightly different note. De la Fuente disclosed in the same press conference that the Tottenham right-back is carrying muscle tightness, which explains his separate treatment on the day. He, too, is expected to be fit for the final.

Assuming both come through without issue, Spain’s starting line-up for the final is expected to include Yamal, along with Barcelona teammates Dani Olmo and Pau Cubarsi. Pedri has not been a regular starter across the latter stages of the tournament, while Ferran Torres has featured as a substitute. Gavi, Eric Garcia, and Joan Garcia have all had peripheral roles and are not anticipated to play a significant part against Argentina either.

For FC Barcelona, the fitness picture is likely to be closely monitored in the immediate aftermath of the World Cup final. On current indications, however, Thursday’s absences represent routine tournament management rather than a concern that extends beyond the week.
