FC Barcelona’s preseason schedule has taken final shape after the club confirmed a friendly against FC Basel, giving supporters a fixed date for what had previously been reported as an ongoing negotiation. The match will be played on Sunday, 16 August, kicking off at 4.30pm CEST at St. Jakob-Park, one of Switzerland’s most recognisable stadiums, as the club has officially confirmed.
The fixture arrives as a replacement for the previously planned trip to Tangier, where the Blaugranes were due to face Ittihad Tanger on 15 August. As Barca Universal has reported, citing Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona pulled out of that fixture after concluding that the ongoing migration crisis in Ceuta, combined with the risk of a large-scale mobilisation being organised for the same date, made travelling to Morocco unsuitable. The decision cost the club an appearance fee worth around €4.5 million, with the Basel match expected to generate a considerably smaller financial return.
Basel play under Stephan Lichtsteiner, the former Juventus and Arsenal full-back who took charge of the Swiss club in January 2026. Their squad includes Xherdan Shaqiri, one of the most recognisable names in Swiss football, alongside Albian Ajeti, Marwin Hitz and Benie Traore, giving Hansi Flick’s side a test against a well-organised domestic outfit rather than a purely commercial exhibition opponent.
The trip to Switzerland will be Barcelona’s third preseason outing, following the opening friendly against Birmingham City and the triangular tournament in Udine against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. It also carries historical weight for the club: Basel hosted the 1979 European Cup Winners’ Cup final, in which Barcelona beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 4-3 after extra time to claim their first major European trophy, a match backed by an estimated 30,000 travelling culers.
Barcelona and Basel have met twice before in official competition, both during the 2008/09 Champions League group stage, with the Blaugranes winning 5-0 away and drawing 1-1 at Camp Nou. This latest fixture will serve as the final away test before Flick’s squad returns to Camp Nou for the Joan Gamper Trophy, which will also double as the team’s official presentation to the home fans ahead of the new campaign.
