FC Barcelona may not have made many marquee signings in the transfer market in recent seasons, but they have managed to tie down some of their most important players to long-term deals at the club. This is as essential to their future as a signing would be.

Sporting director Deco deserves a lot of praise in this regard. The work he has done to get the first-team players to commit to new long-term deals is commendable. The latest to join the long list is Fermin Lopez.

The Spaniard’s stature has grown massively so far this season. Fermin has done brilliantly in midfield, scoring crucial goals and providing timely assists, and he already has 20 goal contributions across all competitions.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, relaying information from Victor Nahe, Barcelona have now verbally agreed a new contract with Fermin that will keep him at the club until June 2031.

The agreement includes an improved salary that reflects his current status within the squad. The deal could even be formally signed as early as this week, underlining how advanced the negotiations are.

Unlike most La Masia prodigies who break into the first team, Fermin took a different path. Never touted as a star in the making during his youth, it took a loan spell at Linares to help him develop into a mature midfielder.

He returned and caught Xavi Hernandez’s attention. Since then, Fermin has not looked back, growing from strength to strength. There are a lot of things you can say about the Spaniard, but no one can deny that he almost feels inevitable.

Whenever Barcelona need a piece of inspiration, Fermin is there to provide it. Arguably, the player with the best long-range shot in the squad at the moment, it is great news for the club that the La Masia graduate has agreed to extend his contract. Let’s hope he stays a Blaugrana for seasons to come.
