FC Barcelona had quite a mild 2025 summer transfer window. They brought in several new players, including Joan Garcia, Marcus Rashford, and Roony Bardghji, and also oversaw at least one notable departure, i.e., Inigo Martinez.
But looking ahead, the Catalan giants are preparing something much bigger. According to Fichajes, the club has already started working on its strategy for the 2026 summer transfer market, with two names highlighted in red: Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez and Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. The plan could see Barça invest up to €180 million to strengthen both the attack and defense.
Bastoni to anchor the defense

With his experience and proven skills, Bastoni is one of the best left-footed center-backs in Europe at this point in time.
Hansi Flick wants him to replace Inigo Martinez in his backline, and Deco has him at the top of his priority list, willing to pay up to €80 million for his signature.
Alvarez lined up as Lewandowski’s heir

In attack, Barcelona are planning for the post-Robert Lewandowski era. The Polish striker is now 37 and entering the twilight of his career, prompting the board to look for a long-term replacement.
The chosen man is Julian Alvarez, whose versatility allows him to play as a No. 9 or a second striker. With Champions League experience, World Cup and Copa America titles with Argentina, and proven quality in Europe, he is seen as the perfect fit for Flick’s high-pressing system. According to the report, Barcelona could prepare a €100 million offer to lure him from Atletico Madrid.
A new backbone for 2026

The strategy from the sporting department is clear: build a new defensive pillar around Cubarsi and secure a proven goalscorer to lead the attack.
While options like Kounde, Eric Garcia, or Christensen remain in the squad, the ultimate aim is to make Bastoni the defensive leader and Alvarez the focal point of the forward line.
If successful, the €180 million double swoop would mark a statement of intent from Barcelona, with the goal of returning to the top of European football and mounting a serious Champions League challenge from the 2026/27 season onwards.
