FC Barcelona has been a strong proponent of the free-agent market in recent seasons. While some may argue that this strategy was driven more by necessity than desire, it still requires considerable effort to identify the right players for the club.

With the exception of the most recent transfer windows, Barcelona has secured several top-quality players as free agents, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Eric García, Sergio Agüero, Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessié, İlkay Gündoğan, and Iñigo Martínez, among others.

Most of these players have been sporting successes, having offered the club something or the other while some like Kessié and Aubameyang have also turned out to be financial successes for a club that is really struggling in this regard for years now.

Now, according to Fichajes, Barcelona have already finalized the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Jonathan Tah, whose current deal is set to expire in June and could arrive as a free agent.

It was recently reported that Juventus are interested in signing one of Barcelona’s captains, Ronald Araújo, and that the player is open to a move to Italy. The Uruguayan’s contract with the Catalan club runs until 2026, and he has yet to sign an extension.

Whether Araújo stays or leaves, it seems likely that Barcelona will pursue a 28-year-old defender next summer. The club is focused on bolstering its defensive depth, and the German player fits the bill perfectly.

It’s likely that the decision will come down to who he would replace in the squad. If Araújo were to depart, then Tah could be the one to fill his spot. Alternatively, one might assume that Barcelona would make either Andreas Christensen or Eric García available on the market.

Barcelona fans would love to see the €55m-rated Uruguayan defender renew his contract and stay at the club. His injury issues aside, he is a world-class defender but it is too early to make a call on his future. Let’s wait and see how it plays out going forward.
