Reinforcing the backline is one of the main priorities of FC Barcelona in the upcoming summer transfer window, and Deco’s transfer strategy has seen the club assess a series of left-sided centre-back profiles over recent months. The latest name to emerge as a serious target is Castello Lukeba of RB Leipzig, with reports now suggesting Barcelona have moved to the front of the queue.

According to Barca News Network, citing reporting from Mundo Deportivo and sources in England, the Catalans have made contact with Lukeba’s representatives in recent days, a step that has seen them emerge as the leading club in the race for his signature. Arsenal are also said to be monitoring the Frenchman, but it is Barcelona who have shown the most concrete interest at this stage.

Lukeba is a 23-year-old left-sided centre-back who has established himself as one of the more accomplished defenders in the Bundesliga over the past two seasons. Comfortable in possession and aggressive in his defensive actions, he fits the profile that Hansi Flick and Deco have been seeking – a ball-playing centre-back capable of operating in a high defensive line and comfortable in a system that demands defenders contribute to build-up play. His versatility adds a further layer of appeal, as Lukeba can also operate at left-back, a position that Barcelona may also look to address before the window closes.

What makes the Frenchman particularly interesting is the combination of technical quality and physical assertiveness that has made him one of Leipzig’s most important players. He is considered a better fit than Alessandro Bastoni, who was previously assessed by the club but ultimately discarded as an option. At 23 years of age, with his best years still ahead of him, Lukeba represents the kind of long-term defensive investment that Deco has been targeting as part of Barcelona’s broader back-line reinforcement plan. He narrowly missed out on a call-up to the France squad for the 2026 World Cup, but that omission is unlikely to diminish his market value.

The primary obstacle is financial. Leipzig value their defender highly and are likely to demand a fee close to his €80m release clause – a figure that would represent a significant outlay for a club already committed to heavy spending this summer. Barcelona have already invested €80m in Anthony Gordon, and are preparing to spend upwards of €100m on a new striker, with Julián Álvarez understood to be the leading candidate. Fitting an €80m centre-back into that budget would not be straightforward, and other defensive targets, including Jakub Kiwior, remain under consideration as potentially more affordable alternatives.

Whether Barcelona can structure a deal that satisfies Leipzig’s valuation while balancing their other summer commitments remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that Lukeba possesses several qualities that make him a highly attractive profile for Flick’s Barcelona project.
