FC Barcelona have had a number of players in recent years who have not gone on to become a success. One such signing that Xavi Hernandez made was Oriol Romeu.

It was the definition of a panic signing: the Catalan club moved to bring back the La Masia graduate from Girona after Sergio Busquets left the club. Sooner rather than later, it became evident that Romeu was not cut out for this level.

Contracted to the club until this past summer, Barcelona terminated Romeu’s contract and allowed him to pursue new opportunities as a free agent.

According to Gerard Romero, via Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Spanish veteran is closing in on a move to Southampton. Romeu has played for the Saints before.

Romeu is set to sign a contract until 2026 with the Championship club as he looks to help the team return to the Premier League. However, things are not going well so far this season.

Manager Will Still has been let go recently, and, along with Romeu, a new manager is also set to walk through those doors. This gives the Spaniard a clean slate to impress his new gaffer.

Despite it not working in Blaugrana colours, Romeu can be a useful player for a team like Southampton, who are often fighting for scraps. Let’s wait and see how things play out on this front in the coming months.
