FC Barcelona have a strong tradition of producing exceptional young talents through La Masia, particularly in midfield. Even when signing players from outside, they often succeed with midfield prospects.
One notable example is Pedri, who Barcelona signed from Las Palmas a few seasons ago. Since then, he has developed into one of the best midfielders in the world and has established himself as one of the most consistent performers in football.
Recently, Barcelona have been linked with another promising midfield talent, Dutch youngster Kees Smit. Ronald Koeman has even compared him to Pedri.
Smit has attracted interest from several top European clubs, with the Catalan side among the potential destinations.
However, according to insider Keith Wyness on Football Insider (via Caught Offside), the 19-year-old Netherlands Under-21 international currently prefers a move to Newcastle United. Wyness revealed:
“Yeah, look, there is big interest in him. I spoke to my Dutch contact this week, who said that Newcastle is the preferred option for the player. I think that makes sense. It would be a great place for him to go. He is a great young talent. There is interest from the big clubs in Europe, certainly. But I think the Barcelonas etc., may come at the next stage of his career if he were to kick on.”
Wyness further added:
“Newcastle is the perfect fit, and I’m told that there is interest from the player’s side about making that move. So let’s see where that one goes.”
Newcastle United have grown in stature in recent seasons. In Eddie Howe, they also have a manager who is not afraid to trust young talent and give them a platform to perform in the Premier League.
However, if Kees Smit wants to hone his trade as a midfielder, there is no better place to be than Barcelona. The opportunity to learn from Pedri and Frenkie de Jong is as good as it gets, and we will have to wait and see what the teenager decides for his career progression.
