The goalkeeper and captain of FC Barcelona left the Catalan club during the winter transfer window to join Girona on loan. The move was driven by a clear objective. Ter Stegen wanted regular minutes, continuity, and the chance to arrive at the World Cup as a strong contender for the Germany number one shirt after years spent behind Manuel Neuer.

However, his plan quickly unravelled. In just his second appearance for Girona, the German goalkeeper suffered a serious hamstring tear that required surgery and is expected to keep him sidelined for close to four months.

The injury not only halted his momentum at the club level but also severely damaged his hopes with the national team at a decisive moment of his career.

This latest blow once again places his international future in doubt. Just when it appeared that the long wait to step out of Neuer’s shadow might finally be ending, the injury has left Ter Stegen facing another uphill battle to earn a leading role for Germany, in what is likely to be his final chance to feature at a World Cup.

The pessimism surrounding his situation was confirmed publicly by Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann, as reported by SPORT, who spoke during the draw for the UEFA Nations League.

“There are three things to consider regarding the goalkeeper position,” Nagelsmann said. To begin with, the “tragic injury, which I deeply regret.”

“I will never rule him out completely because it is his turn. We have to make the right decision for him and for us. And at the moment, the situation is not favourable.”

While Barcelona fans and German supporters alike will hope for a swift and full recovery, the reality is that time is working against Ter Stegen. His focus now shifts to returning stronger at the club level, with the hope that football may yet offer him one final opportunity to play a meaningful role on the international stage.
