FC Barcelona have been working on new operations all throughout the summer transfer window. For the Catalan club, it was essential to sort out and define their key targets for this window. Unfortunately, however, not every target is accessible to Barcelona it seems.

Since the last few weeks, the club has been quite insistent and engaged with the operation of Nico Williams. Having initiated talks himself this summer with the Catalan giants, many expected him to be the next signing for Barcelona after the arrival of Joan Garcia.

Unfortunately, it seems now that the reality of the situation is one that completely goes against that initial belief. In reality, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, Williams has decided to end up renewing with his current club and the official announcement has already been made in collaboration with Athletic Club.

The now former Barcelona target has ended up renewing his contract until 2035, which essentially adds another ten years to his stay at Athletic Club. A bizarre turn of events, considering the kind of success and challenge that awaited him at Barcelona.

Barcelona may as well forget him

Ultimately, however, he has now renewed with his current club for a reported salary of €12 million net per year. That makes him one of the highest-paid players at the club and even a new release clause has been put into his new deal, this one reportedly being set at around €100 million.

All of this simply means that there is no chance of the player now joining Barcelona now or possibly in the future as well. For what it’s worth, the Catalan giants should simply forget about the player at this point and consider any alternative options they have in mind.

Either way, this was not the ideal situation for La Blaugrana. Following positive reports regarding this particular transfer, this new situation now puts Barcelona in a position where they must devote their attention towards another operation altogether.
