Lamine Yamal warming up in Spain jersey before 2026 World Cup match

FC Barcelona’s involvement in the 2026 World Cup has been well documented, with 15 players representing the Catalan club across various national teams. Among them, Lamine Yamal has been the most closely monitored, having arrived in the United States still working through the final stages of recovery from the left hamstring tear he sustained against Celta Vigo in late April – an injury that ruled him out for the remainder of Barcelona’s club season.

As Barca News Network, citing Teledeporte, has reported, Yamal confirmed his fitness status after coming on as a substitute in Spain’s goalless draw against Cape Verde in Atlanta – his first competitive minutes since the injury. The update was encouraging: he stated he is ready to start the group-stage fixture against Saudi Arabia, though he acknowledged that completing 90 minutes is not yet realistic at this point in his recovery.

“It’s still too early to play a whole game, it’s not the time, but I can start and play as many minutes as the coach wants. He chooses. I feel very good and I’m looking forward to it. I had been off the field for a long time, but I feel very good.”

At 18 years of age, Yamal remains central to Luis de la Fuente’s attacking plans, and Spain’s medical staff have been careful to stage his reintroduction – targeting roughly 20 to 30 minutes in the opener before increasing his workload through the group stage. Spain’s squad leans heavily on the Barcelona core, which gives the Blaugranes a particular interest in how each player’s physical condition holds across the tournament.

Yamal also pushed back on the reaction to Spain’s Cape Verde stalemate, arguing that the opening result carries little weight in the broader picture. His composure on that point mirrors the conservative, step-by-step approach being applied to his fitness: avoid unnecessary risk early, build toward full availability for the knockouts. For Barcelona, the priority is that he completes the tournament without setback, a clean bill of health that would directly shape his workload when the Catalan club resumes pre-season preparations in July.

Hopefully, the progressive minutes plan holds to schedule, and Yamal arrives at pre-season fully fit and carrying the rhythm of a deep World Cup run behind him.
