It has subsided significantly in the past season and a half, but one of the constant transfer sagas FC Barcelona found themselves embroiled in, window after window, was Manchester United’s interest in Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman has stood firm in his desire to stay at the Catalan club and is now one of the captains and key members of Hansi Flick’s team. There is absolutely no reason for him to abandon this and move to the mess at Old Trafford.
Despite this, Manchester United legend Jaap Stam has urged his former club to make a move for the Barcelona captain in January. As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, he said:
“My dream signing for Manchester United in the January transfer window would be Frenkie de Jong, from Barcelona.”
Stam did not stop at the recommendation, explaining that the Dutchman has what it takes to improve the team at Old Trafford. He continued:
“United should always be looking for players who can improve the team’s game, and Frenkie has been on the club’s wish list since Erik ten Hag was in charge at Old Trafford.”
He then went on to explain his rationale for why he thinks the Dutchman could improve things in Manchester. He said:
“I worked a lot with Frenkie when he was young at Ajax, and he really is someone who can improve the team’s play, because he’s very comfortable on the ball, has great ability to carry it forward, is creative and finds accurate passes when he has possession — something United need right now.”
Sorry to disappoint you, Stam, but Frenkie is not for sale. He is in his best moment in a Barcelona jersey and recently extended his contract at the club. You can dream all you want, but the club is not selling their captain.
Frenkie has slowly yet surely won over the Barcelona fanbase and will continue to be important for Flick and co., not just this season but for seasons to come.
