Contract management in the wide forward positions has become one of the quieter but more consequential items on Barcelona’s summer agenda. With squad planning for 2026/27 already taking shape, how the club handles Raphinha’s contractual situation will have a direct bearing on wage-bill structure and the leverage available heading into what promises to be a demanding window.

Barca News Network has reported, citing SPORT, that Raphinha is fully committed to remaining at the club despite receiving offers from wealthy Saudi Pro League sides this summer. The Brazilian has held multiple meetings with sporting director Deco in which he has made his desire to stay clear – but has simultaneously pressed for improved terms, specifically wages he considers in line with comparable starters at the club. SPORT notes that both him and the Catalan club are going to remain committed, and he is not going to leave despite the offers he has on the table, even though he is not too happy with his current contract.

At 28 years of age, Raphinha is at the peak of his powers and was arguably the most decisive attacking player in Hansi Flick’s system during last season’s domestic treble. His importance to the Blaugranes was most visible in the moments he was unavailable through injury – absences that consistently disrupted the rhythm of the front line. He renewed his contract last year, running through 2027, but did so under terms his camp now considers below the internal benchmark, with reports citing figures of around €12.5m gross per year – a figure the player’s side believes does not reflect his standing in the squad hierarchy.

However, the negotiation is not straightforward. Barcelona are said to favour a 1+1 extension formula – one guaranteed additional year with a further year conditional on performance or a club option – which would take him through to 2029 but without the full security Raphinha’s side is seeking. His camp is pushing for two fully guaranteed years. There is also an emerging agreement in principle on a revised release clause of around €80m, reportedly active after the 2026 World Cup, though the structure of any extension remains the central sticking point. The Ferran Torres situation offers a useful parallel here: as Barcelona’s approach to player renewals has shown, the club rarely moves quickly when financial flexibility is at stake.

The signing of Anthony Gordon to cover the left wing position gives the Catalan side a degree of negotiating calm – they are not exposed if talks drag. Nevertheless, allowing Raphinha to enter the final year of his deal in 2026 without a resolution would create unnecessary uncertainty and limit their options. Hopefully, both parties find the structure that reflects his contribution to Flick’s project and gives the club the contractual clarity it needs heading into a pivotal season, with his importance to the dressing room dynamic an underappreciated part of the equation.
