Only a few weeks ago, it seemed highly likely that FC Barcelona would exercise their purchase option, or arrive at another setup, to ensure the continuity of Marcus Rashford, who is currently playing for the Blaugrana club on loan.

However, in recent weeks, his continuity has generated increasing doubts. So much so, SPORT reports that the Catalans have decided to freeze the operation, mainly for economic reasons, and also because they ideally want a player who has more growth potential, while also having proven himself on the big stage to some extent.

Barcelona are clear that they would have to pay €30 million to get the Englishman permanently. Meanwhile, his wages remain a source of problem even with the player willing to practically cut his salary into half by spreading his wages over a longer contract.

However, the Blaugranes have ambitious plans for the next summer transfer window, and they are prioritizing the arrival of a striker and a center-back. Thus, even with reduced wages, the winger might prove to be too much of a burden on the Catalan wage bill.

Similarly, Barcelona believe they have younger options whom they can get for a similar price, but whose wages will be significantly lower, including Jan Virgili, Andreas Schjelderup, and Victor Munoz. Furthermore, if Robert Lewandowski and Joao Cancelo continue, the appeal of Rashford’s experience would also be diluted.

Thus, while it remains to be seen how his future will pan out, the continuity of Marcus Rashford at Barcelona is now subject to greater uncertainty than it was previously.
