FC Barcelona are looking to strengthen their team in this upcoming summer transfer window and are already close to completing their first signing of this window, i.e., the RCD Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, for whom they have already paid the release clause.
Meanwhile, the Catalans are working on reinforcing their attack as well, and have been linked with several players in recent weeks. In this regard, one of their activities that generated a lot of attention from the media was the meeting between Deco and the agent of Nico Williams, Felix Tainta.
Barcelona internally debating Nico Williams’ signing
Following this meeting, Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona are now internally discussing the Spanish winger’s signing, and there are several issues under consideration.
Their memories of the player’s pursuit from the last season would be one of the matters being discussed on this subject, but in addition to that, the Blaugranes are clear that to undertake an operation of this magnitude, at least one big sale will have to take place.
Similarly, for now, the Catalans are also clear that Luis Diaz is their favorite candidate for the left wing. However, they also understand that he will not come in for less than €60 million, which makes Nico an interesting option, as he can come for a fixed price and Barcelona will not have to negotiate with Athletic Club if they decide to activate his €58 million release clause.

Several factors against his signing
However, when including taxes, this amount will increase up to €64 million, and this payment will have to be made in full, which would not be easy for a club like Barcelona that has been facing economic problems for quite some time now.
One solution to this problem could be to request a line of credit, which is a normal practice for clubs. But if negotiations for other targets like Luis Diaz are opened, the Azulgrana side might be able to get some favorable payment terms, like installments.
Two more issues make the Blaugranes reluctant to take this route. Firstly, their relations with Athletic Club are at their lowest point, as the Basque club has taken a very hostile position on subjects like FFP, Negreira case, and Dani Olmo and Pau Victor registration. Thus, the Catalans do not want to enrich such a rival.
Similarly, Barcelona have also recently paid the release clause of Joan Garcia, which affected their cash on hand.
Thus, Barcelona will have to assess all these pros and cons before making a final decision about Nico Williams.
