FC Barcelona fans have been eagerly waiting for an update on the contractual situation of Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfield maestro is in the final 12 months of his current deal and continues to be one of the first names on the team sheet for Hansi Flick.

On the back of yet another excellent performance against FC Seoul, the club captain has confirmed his intentions to sign a new deal and continue to wear the Blaugrana. As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, here is what he said:

“Yes, I’m gonna sign new deal with Barcelona. I’m very happy at the club, I didn’t sign yet but it’s gonna happen”

Frenkie’s words come as a great boost

These words should come as a massive boost to fans all around the globe. Frenkie has endeared himself to the Blaugrana faithful in recent months and is currently one of the best players of the team. It bodes well for the project that he wishes to continue.

When fit and playing at his best, Frenkie is right up there with some of the best players in his position in the world. Hansi Flick managed to bring out the defensive side of his game last season and he has massively improved in this regard.

Frenkie looked like a player reborn

Towards the end of last season, the 28-year-old Dutchman also showed his leadership qualities, wearing the armband and commanding a lot of respect. He felt like a player reborn on the pitch with every passing game.

Now, the formality of putting pen to paper remains. One suspects that Frenkie will get a decent deal that would see him continue at the club for the foreseeable future and this is one thing that fans can finally put behind and whole-heartedly support the Dutch midfielder going forward.
