After a very successful 2024-25 season, Hansi Flick would be looking to keep most of his FC Barcelona team intact for the upcoming season, in which the Blaugranes will once again be competing for all the big titles.
However, one position in his team that is set to undergo a significant change is that of the goalkeeper, for which the Catalans have already signed Joan Garcia, who is going to be the starter in goal next season.
With Wojciech Szczesny set to be the back-up for the Spaniard, Marc-Andre ter Stegen does not really have a place in this Barcelona squad, and the club was hoping for his departure this summer, even though the German goalie himself is reluctant to move.
Barcelona surprised as Ter Stegen announces his surgery decision

However, as already reported, Ter Stegen today announced his decision to undergo surgery for his back problems, and in a social media post, also predicted that he would likely remain on the sidelines for around three months.
As Mundo Deportivo has noted, this timeframe announced by the goalkeeper could be another aspect of the tense relationship between him and the Catalan club.
The German veteran released his statement before the Blaugrana club did, and Barcelona were surprised by this turn of affairs as they had agreed with the goalie to jointly announce the decision on Friday.
A few minutes after Ter Stegen made the announcement, the club also confirmed the surgery, but did not comment on the timeframe for his recovery.
Why is recovery time important?
The German goalkeeper had already undergone back surgery back in 2023, which kept him out for 66 days. The report by Mundo Deportivo notes that in repeat cases, like his, the recovery time could extend up to 4-5 months.
Despite his decline in the pecking order, which means the goalkeeper would not have played a lot even if he were fit next season, this recovery time could be important, as an absence of more than four months would allow Barcelona to use 80% of Ter Stegen’s wage margin to register Joan Garcia, Wojciech Szczesny, or Marcus Rashford.
Such financial maneuvering is crucial for clubs operating under La Liga’s tight salary cap, and is somewhat comparable to the strategic flexibility seen in non Gamstop casino sites, which operate outside certain regulatory frameworks and offer alternative options for users who face restrictions elsewhere.
Thus, in addition to eliminating the chances of his departure this summer, Ter Stegen’s decision and statement can also keep Barcelona from utilizing this opportunity to get one of their players registered with La Liga.
For now, it remains to be seen what the length of his spell on the sidelines would be after his surgery, and whether the Blaugranes would be able to get one of their new signings or Szczesny, whose contract was recently renewed, registered with Ter Stegen’s wages, as they did with Dani Olmo last year when Andreas Christensen was injured.
