FC Barcelona have been linked to several players over the course of the summer transfer window. While not every player can be pursued, certain market opportunities are too good to pass up on. Still, Barcelona has been cautious with the opportunities that come their way.

One that was taken early on was the signing of Joan Garcia, and his €25 million was seen as a bargain that the club simply had to make use of. Not too long after that, the club also managed to bring in Roony Bardghji for a very reasonable price.

Similarly, Marcus Rashford’s arrival was also facilitated by the fact that he has been signed on a loan deal by the club. Considering those arrivals, it is safe to say that Barcelona is rather keen on making the most of opportunities that pop up in the market.

Finances were a major issue for Barcelona

However, there was one particular case involving a certain Dutch right-back that the club ultimately backed out of. The player in question was Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries, who looks set to stay at the Italian club this summer following a failed move to Barça.

According to the information provided by SPORT, however, this was a deal that could have gone through had it not been for Barcelona’s troubling finances. Unable to put away the €25 million that they needed for his release clause, La Blaugrana ultimately had to pass up on the opportunity to sign him, despite the fact that joining the Catalan giants was his top priority as per the provided information.

The report claims that the Catalan side would have gone for the operation had they been in a better financial situation. Moreover, even his salary would reportedly have been affordable for the club had they managed to bring him in, with Jorge Mendes being constantly in contact with La Blaugrana.

Plans were derailed and changed

Initially, the club had hoped to have been under La Liga’s 1:1 rule sooner, but they ultimately could not do so and are still waiting to reach that particular status. This derailed their plans to sign a new full-back this summer, and ensuring registrations became the priority instead.

For that reason, the club could not make a formal approach for the player and ended up passing on the opportunity. Fortunately, however, Hansi Flick has a good squad at his disposal already and one that the club hopes to have registered in its entirety before the start of La Liga.
